When to Stay Home

When to Keep Your Child Home

There are times when you're not sure it is necessary to keep your child home from school. Here are some symptoms that may mean your child is sick.

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Running or inflamed eyes or nose
  • Rash
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Sore throat
  • Enlarged glands
  • Excessive coughing

If your child is running a fever of 1000 or more, then the child should remain at home until they are fever free and remain at home until they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications.  A child should remain at home at least 24 hours with no fever, diarrhea, or vomiting following an illness. Notify the school nurse that your child will be absent. When your child returns to school, he must bring a written excuse stating the dates and reason for absence. This excuse must be signed by a parent or legal guardian.
