Theatre Arts I/Introduction to Theatre
Prerequisite: none
Credit: 1
Grades: 9-12

This introductory course is an overview of all aspects of drama including acting, directing, technical theatre, theatre history, and play production. Through lecture and practical application, students will execute a stage production from pre-production to post-production. Although enrollment in a theatre course is not required for participation in EHS productions, it is highly encouraged. Subsequent-level theatre classesavailable through audition/director approval only--will be added each year in order to accommodate advanced theatre students. The fee for this course is $21 and includes membership in the EHS Drama Club for all academically-eligible theatre students. Any theatre course may be used to satisfy the required fine arts ½ credit for the Alabama high school diploma.

Theatre II/III (advanced theatre)
Prerequisite: audition/director approval
Credit: 1 (course may be repeated but ONLY with director approval)
Grades: 10-12

This course will build on and refine knowledge and skills from Theatre I. This course includes an additional emphasis on independent scene study and directing. Students are expected to work on a more independent level and demonstrate the ability to integrate the coaching and critiques provided by the director. They are expected to interpret scripts and begin to internalize characters. Students who have successfully completed Theatre I may audition for Theatre II. No student will be enrolled in an advanced theatre class without director approval. Subsequent-level theatre classes will be added each year in order to accommodate advanced theatre students. Third/fourth-year theatre students will need to audition each spring before registering for the following fall. Only those with director approval may repeat Theatre II. The fee for this course is $21 and includes membership in the EHS Drama Club for all academically-eligible theatre students. Theatre II students are required to prepare and compete at district level competition in the fall. State-level competition is not required but is expected for qualifying students. Any theatre course may be used to satisfy the required fine arts ½ credit for the Alabama high school diploma.

Students in Theatre Arts classes will participate in at least two required public performances: a selected, themed salute and a final. These performances are held in the evening. The dates are announced on the first day of class so adequate planning can be made.
